Display boxes or cardboard display stands: how to prepare your brief
Compare countertop display boxes and cardboard display stands by available space, product loading, visibility, replenishment, assembly and transport requirements.
Start with the display position
Display boxes commonly group smaller products on a counter or shelf. Cardboard display stands can address larger display spaces and tiered arrangements. Measure the available width, depth and height, then check the retailer’s placement restrictions. Location alone does not establish a suitable structure: dimensions, support and design need to be discussed around the actual products.
Consider loading and access together
Record each product’s dimensions, weight and shape, plus the intended display quantity. With a display box, check whether the front lip would hide important product information. With a tiered stand, describe the distribution of products across shelves and how staff will replenish them. Give shelf-level requirements rather than only a total weight. Concept imagery is not a tested load rating; structural and use limits need confirmation.
Plan the message around the products
List the logo, product names, campaign message and information that must remain visible. Explain the viewing direction, header-height restrictions and whether there are multiple products or artwork variants. Establish clear access and product visibility before arranging the printed layout. PDQ display box is a commonly used trade term for counter or shelf display packaging, but a name is no substitute for dimensions and a clear use case.
Include assembly, shipping and replenishment
State the estimated quantity, number of stores, installation position and who would assemble the display. Ask about flat shipping, assembly steps, outer packing and storage conditions; do not assume these arrangements are available until confirmed. If the project must serve both transport and retail display purposes, describe each requirement separately. Finish your brief with the space measurements, product details, artwork, quantities and requested dates.
